1998 BMW 740iL
Own this iconic 1998 BMW 740iL, one of the classic E38 generation 7 Series. This silver, garage-kept beauty is ready to be refurbished or restored -- a rear-wheel drive front-engine 4-door luxury sedan that comfortably seats five. With 282 horsepower, the naturally aspirated 4.4 Liter 32v quad-cam V8 gasoline engine achieves 24mpg on average and can travel 422 miles before requiring a refill of its 22.5 gallon capacity fuel tank. It features a 5 speed automatic transmission. The high-performance engine burns no oil and the transmission was professionally rebuilt in 2018. Luggage space is 17.7 cubic feet, with a maximum payload capacity of 1,014 lbs. The car has never been in an accident. Mileage: 242,000
This model comes with a variety of special features, including BMW’s unique HPS, or Head Protection System. Two tube-shaped air bags are concealed in the windshield frame. In the event of a severe side impact crash, they deploy and protect the driver’s or passenger’s head from striking the car. BMW also outfits the 740 with door-mounted side-impact airbags and driver and passenger front-mounted bags. The leather seats are firm, comfortable and supportive, with plenty of room between the front and rear seat. In fact, riding in the rear is like being chauffeured in a limousine. This 740iL comes with every power accessory available. Other equipment includes Electronic Damper Control, power moon-roof, dual zone climate control, sport suspension, electric seat adjustment and electric steering wheel adjustment.
The current owner will include a set of BMW summer wheels and tires (though one is currently flat.) In addition to the wheels, side-trim panels, steering wheel, instrument clusters, summer grills and more are included in the asking price.
The wheel-speed sensors need replacement. In adverse conditions, the sensors will cause the
transmission to move into BMW’s Fail-safe Mode, keeping the car in second gear until re-set.
The air-conditioner works, but needs a re-charge. The car passed its last Illinois Air-Team environmental test, but the catalytic converters on the dual exhaust system will eventually need attention. There’s minor rust, with most around the right-rear wheel-well. There are some dings and parking-lot dents on two of the fenders and the interior headliner is sagging.
